On the cap of Kiri box, the painting was painted by Bernard Leach.
There is repaired part on handle. But it is inconspicuous.
Bernard Leach was a ceramic artist, and he was a also painter and designer.
He was born in Hong Kong in 1887. But his mother died when he was born, and he moved to his grand father’s home in Japan.
(His grand father was a English teacher in Kyoto.)
In 1897, he moved to U.K.
In 1907, he started to study etching. And then, he got acquainted with Takamura Kotaro who was a Japanese artist and poet.
In 1909, he moved to Japan again, and he lived in Tokyo.
And he got acquainted with Yanagi Soetsu (Yanagi Muneyoshi) and Shirakabaha school.
In 1912, he started to to study ceramics under 6th generation Ogata Kenzan.
He was allowed to use the signature 7th generation Kanzan by his master.
In 1920, he moved to U.K again with Hamada Shoji who was a Japanese ceramic artist.
And they set up the Leach Pottery at St. Ives, Cornwall.
In 1934, he moved to Japan again.
In 1963, he received the Order of CBE.
In 1974 he received the Kokusai Koryu Kikin-sho prize. (Japan Foundation prize).
He passed away 1979.
