Tanto in Shirasaya with Koshirae
Signature: San-in Tetsu Hideaki Kore (Wo) Tamesu.
Showa 6 Nen 8 Gatsu Hi.

The blade is polished, with a silver habaki, in a shirasaya.
Blade length: 22.7cm or 8.94 inches.
Sori: None.
Width at the hamachi: 1.87cm or 0.74 inch.
Kasane: 0.63cm or 0.25 inch.
Era: Showa period. August 1931.
Shape: A hira-zukuri tanto.
Horimono: Kakinagashi Bo-hi is carved on the both sides of the blade.
Jitetsu: Jinie appears on the smooth and fine itame-hada.
Hamon: Suguha-hamon.


 

Special features: A swordsmith commonly known as Horii
Toshihide used the swordsmith name Akihide from 1913 to 1933.
His real name was Kaneyoshi Horii who was born in 1886 as
the third son of Hirokichi Tokuda in Shiga pref. Toshihide became
a pupil of Horii Taneaki in 1904 and succeeded the Horii School as the Third.
Toshihide used three names: Hideaki, Kaneaki and Toshihide.
In 1918, he went to Hokkaido and continued forging sword there.
Toshihide is thought as one of a representative swordsmith of
the first half of Showa period, in the prewar Japan.
He passed away in 1943 during the Second World War.
According to the inscription on the tang, he made this tanto on
trial using iron produced in San-in area famous for the production of iron from ancient times.
No words can express its beautiful jitetsu.
Beautiful file pattern on the tang requires a great deal of skill.
It shows his conscientious work.
